So I got this for my youngest that is afraid of the dark and prefered his flashlights to nightlights. However he would fall asleep with out turning the flashlight off and of course the batteries would start to die. And by the next night his flashlight wouldn't work. Spending X amount on batteries a week.
So I set out to try to find a hand crank one that didn't need to take batteries and if he left it on all night who cares. All he would have to do is crank it a bit and it was good as new.
So far we've had the flashlight for about 5 days and it has lived up to its standard and I have not had to replace any batteries! I wish I would have found this sooner and will eventually buy another one just incase something happens to this one (we travel alot and I have 2 lively boys)

I bought the rechargable Dynamo Flashlight alongside the similar, but much smaller, LEGO Head Lamp as stocking stuffers for my two girls (this guy fits perfectly in the *top* of a stocking, where he peeks over the edge). Both girls like to read in bed at night and have a fascination with mom and dad's flashlights so these seemed like (and in fact were) perfect gifts. The Dynamo went to my almost-three year old.
The upside of the Dynamo flashlight is, obviously, the ability to recharge it. We had an opportunity this morning to see how long it would last on its initial charge (we had maybe turned the crank 2 to 3 times beforehand) and my daughter left the light on for about 5 hours. When I noticed it later, the light had dimmed but not gone entirely out, which seems an important thing to note: the light does not die all at once, it fades and becomes dimmer slowly as it dies out. We turned the crank maybe 3 - 5 times and the light resumed its brightness immediately and kept the charge throughout periodic use for the rest of the day.
I also like that with this light, as opposed to the head lamp, it would be difficult to misplace because of its size, is large enough that we're not overly concerned about choking hazards, seems really durable, and that the light it puts out - while being quite bright - doesn't hurt your eyes when shined directly into them. The smaller head lamp, on the other hand, does hurt your eyes. Both use the same strength bulbs, but the light isn't quite as diffused in a smaller device as in this larger variation.
An earlier comment wondered about the difficulty of using the crank to charge this light, and I would say it's next to nothing. It's far easier than my old rechargeable flashlight from when I was a kid that had a trigger-style device for charging (both my girls have to use both hands just to pull the trigger on the old flashlight, and then still seem to struggle a bit). I'd say it's quite possible a two year old with reasonable dexterity could turn the arm-crank without assistance, and any four year old could do this, no doubt.
Besides, turning the crank is almost a kind of amusement as it makes that fun 'ziiimmm-ziimmm' sounding whir when it's being charged, and kids love any excuse to make noise.
I think the combination of novelty (Lego man), durability (no batteries, hard ABS-type plastic) and practicality (kids won't outgrow the need of a flashlight - heck, I'd love to have one of these for myself) make this one of the most ideal gifts we chose this season.
I will say that, out of the box, the head lamp garnered more attention than did this one - which is ironic, since I was much more hesitant to purchase that one - but I think the long-term value makes this an awesome toy/novelty nonetheless.
Highly recommended.
For those concerned with country of origin, the flashlight is made in China. However, it appears to be made of the same glossy ABS plastic as Legos and has minimal paint (the face and Lego design). ABS plastic has often been independently tested as being a much safer plastic regarding contamination with heavy metals and it does not contain BPA, like other plastics (PVC and polycarbonate).

My 7 year old loved receiving this for his birthday! It does not require an excessive amount of cranking to get it to work and the 'charge' from it lasts quite long. It has stood up to a number of drops and has no chips in it even though it is a hard plastic. If you have a Lego lover in your family, this would be a great addition.

These are one of those toys that does not require a battery! My son loves that he can power his own toy, and I love it because I am not spending a fortune on batteries. Would recommend it to any LEGO fan!

I bought this for my son as a Christmas present and I am very with the purchase. While it isnt the brightest light it works great. My son uses it as a reading light at bed time by propping the lego man on his chest with the feet facing his book. Perfect for him and no batteries to worry about!
