Every Star Wars fan's dreamJan 08, 2011

Fragile yes- but seriously, just add some reinforcing extra Legos where you see weak points. A lot of work- my son is 5 so I built it in about 3 hours of intensive assembly. But the final product is quite incredible and gets played with all the time now. Great to have so many characters included too.
Word to the Wise: In order to efficiently build a huge set like this, and not go insane you MUST lay eveything out by color, if not size on a big table/counter before hand! Don't think you can "find" pieces from a big spread out pile- it will take 2-3 times longer!

Well designed, like all Lego products - but beware...Dec 28, 2010

We are big fans of Lego products - my seven year old son loves them. This set is well designed, but it is fragile when assembled and can not really be played with much, which is a little disappointing for my son who wants to set up battles and recreate scenes from the movies. Another caution, this set does not come with numbered bags like many other sets - you must open and dump out all six bags at once in order to build it.

Don't sneeze near itApr 20, 2011
By N. Lancaster Built this for my five year old son. He loves it, but the whole thing will quickly crumble with any kind of handling. It's built to look right, not play right. I'm sure it looks great on a shelf. I'm seriously considering super glue to hold it together.

Private sellers charge too muchFeb 09, 2011

This kit is available at the LEGO online shop for one hundred and ten dollars. Private sellers mark up the price by 20 dollars or more. Be sure to comparison shop before paying too much for this kit.
If you are a huge fan of the Empire Strikes back then this is for you. We have this along side our Wampa Cave 8089. The detail is good and it's built to mini-figure scale. Meaning there is room for only a single mini fig in the cockpit. The commander and two snowtroopers ride along in the body. Like some of the large kits from LEGO, this kit breaks easily. You will need to discard a few of the more unstable chunks and reinforce here and there if you want a stable model. But this has been the case with legos for years. A good kit that's a bit on the pricey side, but plenty of fun for the builders at our house.

Not for kids (seriously)May 17, 2011
By Drew Build As others have posted, you MUST lay everything out before hand. The build took about 2-3 hours. There is a lot of repetition, however, that's self-evident with 4 near-identical legs and both sides of the body and head. Experienced Lego builders will find humor in the build, as Lego uses figurine hand tools as various parts to the Walker. The build is straight forward. Follow the TWO instruction manuals and you'll have this thing together in an evening.
Size The model is a good size and has some weight to it. However, it is top heavy and should be positioned in a stance with all four feet on the ground. It stands about 13 inches tall (from table to top of the body, NOT head/cockpit).
Weak Points There are a few weak points to the model that have to be addressed. I will simply list them here, and discuss them further below. The neck is only supported by a single crossed axle rod. The neck only moves side to side. The "knee caps" are only held on by a single interlocking point. Thus, they constantly come off when attempting to bend the knees. The cover of the cockpit is held by two "wrenches" and comes off easily. The side armor of the body usually pops off instead of swinging open. Although these aren't all of the weaknesses, they are the biggest when considering the areas that will see the most action from a child.
Not a Children's Toy Star Wars has long been favored by older generations, and usually only those who are now over 20. With the release of the prequels and the Clone Wars cartoons, the saga has engulfed a younger generation. This being said, the marketing of Lucas Arts and Lego aims to capture both collectors and children. Unfortunately, this model is clearly a piece meant to sit on a shelf. There are many weak points on the model that would see constant use by a child. For instance, the knees have pieces which pop off easily and in order for a kid to play with this model, they will constantly be bending the knees. Access to both the cockpit and the body are covered by pieces which have a tendency to come off instead of swinging open. Therefore, a kid who wants to deploy their Storm Troopers to attack the Rebel scum. The biggest gripe that you will have, if you manage to secure and reinforce the joints of the knees / armor covers, is going to be the neck. It's held on by a single rod and does NOT look down. Slight pressure on the head WILL dislodge pieces on the body AND/OR break the connecting rod. These weak points may be a great advantage to the Alliance (especially those of you living on Hoth), however, we want to keep our children happy with Lord Vader and the Emperor.
Conclusion As someone who has constructed many Star Wars models, this one looks FANTASTIC displayed next to my AT-ST. Pairing the AT AT with the Hoth battle set would make for an excellent shelf/desk display.
Value If you're looking for a toy, then do NOT spend the $100+ on this model. I purchased this set from the brick and mortar Lego store in Orlando, FL. (Even the sales associate noted that the model is great for collectors and terrible for kids.) There are many coupons online that can help bring this model below or near $100. As someone who seriously collects Star Wars Lego sets, this is a MUST HAVE. It will catch someone's eye from WAY across the room. It's a great conversation piece and looks sharp.
