A cool model at a nice manageable sizeJan 08, 2011
By black thumb Back in high school I had the Revell plastic-and-glue model Star Destroyer, and my friends and I spent a LOT of time drawing it, flying it around my room, and zooming it slowly over our heads to replicate the opening shot of A New Hope. So the lines and details of the Imperial Star Destroyer are engraved on my brain. This midi-scale Lego model is pretty darned accurate. It has a lot of nice little touches, like both ventral hangar bays and big areas of raised surface detail that echo those on the movie ships. The back end looks particularly cool, with the three big engines and four smaller engines between them. They are even correctly recessed with hull plates sticking out beyond them above and below.
The "display stand" is basically a kick stand that snaps onto the bottom between the main hangar bay and the dome over the reactor. It is small and unobtrusive but lets the model sit horizontal when it is parked, without leaning or tipping. You can easily snap it off for play and then put it back on for display, which is a nice touch.
The design isn't perfect. The main hull consists of four big triangular sections that snap onto a hidden chassis at an angle to create the classic Star Destroyer lines. There is minimal space between the four sections, but if you look at the front end of the ship from _exactly_ above, below, or from either side, you can see a narrow strip of light where the four sections approach each other but don't quite merge. Also, where the smooth top and bottom sections come together at the sides, the rough, detailed area between them is somewhat thicker than it would be in a perfectly scaled model. But these are very small nits to pick and they don't really detract from the finished model, unless you are an stickler for absolute perfection (in which case, the Ultimate Collectors Series Star Destroyer can still be had, for vastly more money).
The completed model is about 9" long and about half that wide and tall. It is DENSE. Most Lego sets are at least somewhat airy when built, to accommodate mini-figures and so on, but this one is mostly bricks all the way through. It feels reassuringly solid in your hand, and it is easy to pick up and play with without feeling like you're going to break it, which isn't always the case with the bigger Lego Star Wars vehicles. My little boy dropped mine once when he was carrying it one-handed, but the repair job only took a couple of minutes.
Although the Midi-Scale Star Destroyer looks good just sitting on the shelf, it practically cries out to be picked up and zoomed around the room. About five minutes after I finished building it, I was flying it over my head making laser blast sounds and talking like Darth Vader. Any toy that can make me feel that much like a kid again has earned its five stars. Highly recommended.

Beautiful Symmetry!Jul 13, 2011
By ToyMan NYC The Kuat Drive Yards' IMPERIAL STAR DESTROYER is a wonderful kit with great, symmetrical designs and lines throughout. While mostly being a display model....it has some 'swooshability'!
It's a kit with 423+ pieces, over 9.5 inches long, nicely designed (especially the engines), good build (not great but not boring), nice weight/heft to the model and also comes with a simple, effective display stand. Makes a great desktop model.
PRO's... - As mentioned above, a well designed and beautiful desktop model than can also be played with. - Details on the ship such as Rear View detailing three KDY Destroyer-1 Ion Engines and four Cygnus Spaceworks Gemon-4 Ion Engines... - ...Bridge/Communications Tower and twin Deflector-Shield Generator Domes... - ...Turbolaser Turrets (3 on each side)... - ...Bottom of model details with Secondary Launch Bay towards top, Primary Docking Bay in the middle (where Princess Leia's Blockade Runner docked), just below that is the Solar Ionization Reactor. - Simple yet effect display stand (which can be attached/detached from bottom of model).
CON's... - You'll notice gaps between the top and bottom sections which for the most part aren't too noticeable except for the front where you can see through it too much. - At times the engines can fall off during play. - No minifigures (for the adult builder(AFOL) that's fine but would've helped with selling to younger builders)
But...like I said before...nice line throughout, great for display especially on your desktop at work (dreaming of conquering the galaxy...;), decent for parts (lot's of angle plates and tiles) and it's quite 'swooshable'.
The Empire would be proud of such a representation of their awesome, wedge-shaped Imperial-Class Star Destroyer...the core of their navy...build and behold it's might...!

A direct Hit!May 11, 2011

"halfpint"
We purchased this set for our nephew on his 7th birthday and it was a hit. The first set out of the box and it was together before he went to bed that night. Great set for the value.
Decent DestroyerFeb 29, 2012
By Thomas D. Parker This middle class Star Destroyer is a decent enough substitute when you can't shell out the $200 or more for the Limited Edition, massive scale kit. Definitely more of a looker than a toy as it is easy to knock the command deck off or angle the plates when picking it up. I like it.
Almost PerfectJan 13, 2012
By LEGO Fan Unlike many of the other reviews, I bought the set for myself as I am a lifelong Star Wars and Lego fan. The sets design is unique and rather ingenious to get the angles right. It is a fairly easy set to construct for anyone who has played around with Legos before. It is a wonderful display piece and comes with a removable stand, but Legos are meant to be played with. It stands up to casual play well, but would not do well if used in a more intense way. I know from personal experience that kids usually like to make their Legos blow up and create a realistic battle field, scattered with the remnants of the involved creations (or a living room floor full of small sharp pieces of plastic), so I would save it for older, more appreciative, builders. For any Star Wars buffs, it is mostly accurate, it should be a little longer, have a bit taller super structure leading to the tower, and it only has 3 turbolaser turrets on each side instead of 4, but it is still rather impressive. The rear engine pieces do fall off easily but it is only a minor problem. It is easy to hold and fly around without worrying about pieces falling off. While I someday hope to have the much larger 3ft long star destroyer, this one will do for now as it is easy to transport and much much much more affordable. A great buy for any Star Wars fan.
