My son and daughter just love this set. Great value and loads of fun! I really love the easy set up and the carry along handle for my little ones when they are on the go!! Best play set for Thomas so far!!

Prior to going into detail about Rumbling Gold Mine Run, a little of our own "Thomas" history... As first time grandparents, my husband and I wanted to start some type of collection for our grandson that he could possibly pass along to his own kids one day. Our grandson was 2 1/2 at the time, and had been talking a lot about a certain train named Thomas (a little fella whom - now hard to believe! - we'd never heard of.) After doing some research, it seemed the Take-n-Play line might be the perfect investment to engage and encourage his active imagination, as well as provide a fun way for us to interact with him. What a rewarding decision... we've had SO much fun together with this quality line of trains, vehicles and playsets! As he approaches 4, a large portion of our basement has become a wonderful Sodor land of make believe that we all enjoy visiting - and continues to hold his interest, which is quite a feat given the tendency at that age to move in and out of toy phases so quickly!
Mining is a huge industry on Sodor, and in this playset, Thomas escapes a crumbling mine by zipping down a ramp and - in the process - setting off a gold mine explosion! Rumbling Gold Mine Run is an elaborate playset, with THREE downhill ramps! Two of them head down from the front of the mine, and at the bottom of each there are brown gates that can be opened to allow (included!) Thomas to venture off in 2 different directions (where you can hook up other playsets or additional track). The other heads down from the back of the mine, and provides a 3rd place to connect up to playsets/track. Sitting atop the gold mine is a bright blue office with a grey roof (to which the carrying handle is attached), with a red sign reading "SODOR MINING CO." above a few windows and a door with a lantern alongside, as well as a grey & red water tower. On the next level, you can peer into the mine shaft (the detailing on these TnP sets is really great). When you push the water tower up and down, gold nuggets visibly rumble around inside, and a lever on the back of the mine raises the piece of track inside the mine, sending Thomas out of the mine, down the ramp, and as he passes a smaller abandoned mine with a boarded up door (reading "MINE CLOSED"), gold nuggets fly out from the top and the door flings open, revealing another shaft and more gold! The first level of the mine has a larger "SODOR MINING CO." sign above two "wood" framed openings at the front, as well as two more openings (side and back) where mining crew/vehicles can enter (as well as trains... this IS make believe, so trains don't ALWAYS need tracks, right?), with strewn rocks, picks, etc. imprinted into the floor (again, they really pay attention to little details in these sets!) Rumbling Gold Mine first appeared on Take-n-Play's 2011 Collector Checkist, and with Fisher-Price's March 2012 MSRP of $43.00, I think it's worth that price... I paid a little more ($44.99) for my grandson's, and he was excited to receive it as one of his 2011 Christmas gifts! F-P's MSRPs for their playsets have generally reflected what I've come to categorize as "beginner" (under $25 MSRPs), "intermediate" ($25-$30 MSRPs), and "elaborate" ($35 & over MSRPs.) The only thing I'd caution is that if you want a set your youngster can EASILY and QUICKLY take on the road with you, you might want to consider one of the $30 & under MSRP playsets instead. Although my grandson really enjoys his "elaborate" sets (Rock Quarry Run, Thomas at Pirate's Cove, The Dieselworks, Rescue from Misty Island, Load & Go, Rumbling Gold Mine Run), I wouldn't recommend them for easy transport. Those are the only 6 of his 21 playsets that Grandma says have to stay put in the basement! AND... new in 2012 are the Sodor Steamworks Repair Shed, as well as The Great Quarry Climb (being introduced in conjunction with 9/2012's Blue Mountain Mystery movie and featuring new character Owen, a rock elevator!)

Wonderful toy, very cute and creative. I would recommend this toy for every toddler. And for the moms and dads that pick up....quick and easy to put away.

My boys are often looking for toys to grab and go whether it be to carry to another room of the house or take on the go with them. The Rumbling Gold Mine Run Take-n-Play portable playset is a simple set but so much fun. It has is all one piece and folds up for easy carrying, then you can hook it up easily to other Take-n-Play sets. This set comes with one die cast metal Thomas train and a few little rocks to attach on for exploding fun. You can also push down on the tower to watch the gold rumble or push the lever on the back so Thomas flies down faster on the ramp.
Overall, this set is perfect for any Thomas fan. It has a carrying handle for easy portability and everything easily stores inside. We have tried other Take-n-Play sets before and I admit I had trouble closing up the set, but this one really does snap closed quickly! I can wait to find the rest of our Take-n-Play sets to hook them all up together now since we finally have a few sets to do it with! It does only work well with the Die-Cast metal trains and plastic tracks but it is basically the same concept as the wooden Thomas sets. It is ready to go pretty much right out of the box (no tools required) and it does not take batteries either! It has kept my boys occupied for a good amount of time and they love that it is easy to bring to grandma's house!
