Battery issue that is easy fixed and built to last!Jun 07, 2011

My son is almost 3 and LOVES his Thomas trains. He has 3 different trains; Thomas, Spencer and Arthur. The only one we had a problem with is Spencer but the fix was easy for us. When I put the battery in and flipped the switch on Spencer nothing happened. I figured before trying to return it I'd try to fix it. My first thought was that the battery may not be making contact with the metal pieces so I decided to just slip a tiny piece of aluminum foil (I cut a piece about the size of my pinky nail and folded it in 4 to make it really small) in between the battery and the metal piece. This is probably stating the obvious but I put the foil in between the + side of the battery with the nub and the metal piece. It worked perfectly. I shouldn't have to do this and it is a problem with the train but returning it would have been a bigger hassle. I knocked off 1 star for the battery problem. Yes it's an easy fix but the train doesn't work without a battery and if the battery doesn't fit properly then it doesn't work - regardless whether I can fix it or not. For $15 I'd expect more. These trains are not cheap so I'd expect them to at least work. On the bright side, our trains take a BEATING. My son tosses them all over the place. He throws them and basically tortures the poor things (if it's possible to torture a toy) and all of our trains still work perfectly. So while the battery fit may be an issue other than that it's built great.
Fun for kidsFeb 16, 2012
By Baby's Slave I bought this one to replace the other one that is missing. Trackmaster trains are well built, not too big or too small to a 1.5-2 yr old kid. The last Spencer train held up pretty well after my little boy damaged it everyday for 6 months.

My grandson is just under three years old and had squeals of delight when he received this toy for Christmas. Spencer is one of his favorite toy trains. It was definitely worth the extra effort and money to find this and purchase it online through Amazon. His joy is worth every penny!

By Hollie I purchased this as a "Santa" gift for my 3 yr old son and he LOVES it! I only got to touch it long enough to put the battery in it. :)
More durable than it looksNov 18, 2011
By Mel My son has a couple of the die-cast Thomas trains but my husband bought him this Spencer from the Trackmaster set. At first I thought it would break within a day because the plastic feels thin and there are motorized parts. My son is not even 2 and-a-half yet so he's rough on his trains, not only drops them down full flights of stairs, but pushes them backwards on the carpet even when the train is on, lets it run under the couch and leaves it there spinning its wheels until I get annoyed enough to move the couch and retrieve him, and has even dropped him in the sink but you'd never know it. The die-cast trains' paint chips when they get dropped or crashed together but I'm really impressed with the durability of this train. We don't have the track, my son just runs it back and forth across the floor, watches it until it runs into something, then runs after to turn it around, very fun for him. It does go through batteries, about one a week for us since he lets it run for hours a day.
