Pretty good figure, though not as "Ultimate" as he could be.Aug 01, 2011
By Trans. Collector Reactions have been extremely splintered over this figure. Some people absolutely love it, but a lot of people just hated it right off the bat. I was one of the people who really had high hopes for this figure, but knew not to set expectations too high. So, naturally, I tracked down this figure as soon as I heard he was released. It took me awhile but now that I have him, he's totally worth it. He's huge, he's fun, and just all around impressive. However, he is not screen accurate (his combined mode isn't even featured in the movie), so if you're expecting nothing but accuracy, you may be disappointed.
Omega Armor Power Up Mode
Pros - Massive size, standing 22 inches tall (with wingspan). It's incredible to look at and makes an amazing display piece. - Massive mech-tech canon stores perfectly on his back, or flips down to give him a new helmet and huge gun that is held with both hands. - Very stable, he won't be likely to fall over easily at all. - Aside from some issues with his wings, he's pretty durable. - Feet design make him incredibly stable - 6 mech-tech ports on the top of his highest wings, along with 4 on his canon. Attaching a weapon to each of those make him look even more incredible.
Cons - His wings pop off frequently, but they're easy to snap back on. - His arms don't stay together well, which can be a real pain. You'll have to hold a large portion of the arm keep it in one piece while moving it. - Limited poseability, pretty common for combiners, but for an $80 price tag that's a bit painful. No waist articulation, and only side to side leg mobility. - Combined mode head is a too small, unless you flip the canon out to give him a helmet. - Helmet is permanently attached to the canon, so you have to have the gun out for a proper sized head.
His combined mode is very impressive, and the wing pop-off problem is not that big of a deal. While it has very little range of motion, the sheer size more than makes up for it.
Side Note 1: If you hate the "Butterfly wings" you can fold them and position them anyway you want, in no way are his wing positions limited. They can look like a cloak, or more like the jet pack he uses in the movie.
Side Note 2: If you want a bigger head for his combined mode, you have to do a mod to remove his canon's helmet from the canon segment. Look up Peaugh's youtube video "Ultimate Optimus Prime Helmet Modification" if you want him to have the helmet with no canon.
Optimus Prime robot mode
Pros - Very small amount of excess car parts (Kibble) are present in his robot mode. - Decent poseability, not great but it's pretty good. His balance is also pretty good, he can stand on one leg with the other leg raised in a kicking position without any stability problems. - Great head sculpt. - Pretty durable. - Stays together very well in robot mode. - Very sturdy smokestacks, not the ones that get bent out of shape easily. - Intermediate transformation, Revenge of the Fallen Leader Prime he is not. It's not very hard, but it's not easy enough for a 5 year old. - Larger than a voyager, but smaller than a leader
Cons - This con is subjective. Most people dislike his "Popeye" arms. His front wheels from vehicle mode do not collapse or store in any way. However, It's not as big of a drawback in person as the pictures made it seem. - No waste or wrist articulation. For 80 bucks, I definitely did expect that. - Shoulder guards can pop off (this could just be my figure though, it may not happen on all of them, and it's easy enough to snap back on).
I had a lot of fun with his separate robot mode, and posing him is pretty enjoyable. His balance is pretty good, and I just love his kibble-free look. The arms, waist, and legs are a setback, but it really isn't that bad. He looks much better in person and is VERY far from being the worst Optimus Prime ever as a few people have claimed (In my opinion, that title easily goes to his Machine Wars incarnation or Titanium Optimus Prime). You'll either love this mode or hate it. He may not be the most movie accurate, but if you really want near perfect screen accuracy, get Jetwing Optimus Prime from Takara (extremely pricey, though) or the Revenge of the Fallen Leader Prime.
Side Note: For those interested, he's about the size of an Ultra Class figure when he's not in power up mode, so his size is in between a voyager and leader class figure.
Semi Truck/Trailer mode
Pros - Evokes a classic G1 feel - Rolls and turns nicely - His combined mode's canon stores very well underneath it, and nothing drags on the ground when rolling it along. - Little to no robot parts are visible in his Truck/Trailer mode. - The Truck itself looks pretty nice, and has a very good paint job. - Mech-Tech ports aplenty. He's got quite a few ports all over him to place any mech-tech weapon on.
Cons - Paint apps could be better on the trailer itself. It's a standard dull grey, and the Autobot logo could look much better. - No vehicle mode features. - Cab portion is a bit too small for the trailer
Side note: His trailer can fit on the Revenge of the Fallen Leader Prime, but it does require some customization to the trailer hitch.
Not a whole lot to say about this mode, it's very nice and looks great, rolls well, but the paint apps could look better and it could use some electronic for this mode.
Final thoughts: I went in with somewhat high expectations, but I knew not to expect another ROTF Leader Prime figure (because he's pretty much perfect), and I came away very satisfied. The whole package is quite good. His combined mode is an incredible display piece, the size and variety of wing poses make him a very strong looking figure. His separate robot mode isn't the most screen accurate, but it is a lot of fun. The trailer mode is a fantastic recreation of his G1 appearance.
Don't go in expecting another ROTF Leader Prime, because this Prime isn't screen accurate. However, he's a ton of a fun and is, to me, worth the price. His easy transformation is less time consuming than ROTF Leader Prime, so he is much more kid accessible, but is geared towards older kids or collectors. Also, the instructions aren't all that helpful. It's all pictures and no words, and with an instruction sheet this huge, it's pretty cumbersome and unclear in what it means.
With supervision, it should be fine for older children, but it will probably be too complex (and huge) for younger kids.
Overall: 8/10

Awe-inspiring and frustrating.Aug 23, 2011
By Karen K. Hart This Optimus definitely has the "wow" factor and is very impressive. He's cool to look at and does so many things. But how to get him to do those things. . .? This is a complex, complicated toy. There are various instructions for transforming him--approximately 20 steps for each transformation. The illustrations are primarily monochromatic (with a few highlighted parts), which could work well under some circumstances, but doesn't in this case. The illustrations are also small, and the combination of the lack of color and the size makes it very difficult to pick out details. As I worked to move the robot-mode Optimus's torso away from the outer-shell armor, I had no idea what I was doing. First I discovered that a piece of twine still held the body to the armor, so I managed to clip that. Then I still couldn't rotate Optimus's shoulders forward like the illustration suggested. Eventually, I succeeded--but honestly, I have no idea how I did it or how to do it again in the future. Changing the armor into a trailer is difficult. In the illustrations, the arms of the armor seem to magically fit into place inside the trailer. But those arms have maybe a dozen joints! How does one manipulate them to get them to fit snugly inside? My husband (who has a degree in agricultural engineering, has built plenty of models as a hobby, works on cars quite frequently, works with computers professionally, and is currently building a large shed) took over transformation from robot to truck for me, and he has just completed transformation from armor to trailer. It was a long, frustrating experience--it probably took 45 minutes--and then he figured out that we were trying too hard and that the arms don't actually fit inside the trailer--rather, they kind of stick out underneath it. Suffice it to say that I think a person might have better luck with the transformations if (s)he didn't consult the instructions at all than if (s)he tried to follow them carefully. I suppose I've come to expect frustration from Transformers toys. I don't remember having bad experiences with my own Transformers toys as a kid, but my son's toys have been another story. His interest started with a Bumblebee toy someone gave him for his 6th birthday. That toy is easy to transform into a robot, but hard to transform into a car, and we're not sure it's going to retain its ability to stay transformed into a car. The brittle old plastic on the vintage G1 Optimus I bought on eBay resulted in a snapped leg [on the toy] in less than a day of relatively gentle play. This new, fancy Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Ultimate Optimus Prime toy obviously has its own frustrations. It's rated for ages 5 and up. It does seem sufficiently durable to handle having kids as young as five play with it, but I have to wonder how long it would take a kid that young to learn to do the transformations without help. Ultimate Optimus Prime might be a good gift for older Transformers enthusiasts (teenage +) who have a lot of patience and intuition as far as transformations go, and I should repeat that it's very, very cool in some ways. Even the sound effects are pretty awesome, and I'm not usually a big fan of toys that have sound effects. But I'm thinking that this particular Optimus isn't for most people, because a toy this expensive shouldn't be this frustrating.

Voyager Prime with a TrailerAug 31, 2011
By D_Strasse
"D_Strasse"
A Lot of attention on this figure has been paid to what is the most polarizing aspect of this Optimus Prime - "Butterfly Prime". (Butterfly Prime is the nickname for the pose that is always shown in photos). I'd like to separate the figure into the small and large (combined) figures to focus on what I see are the pro and cons each:
Small Optimus Prime: Pros: - Unique Voyager-sized Optimus Prime. This version of Optimus Prime is fairly accurate of how he looks in the movie in truck mode, and still pretty good in robot mode. Better than the new Dark of the Moon Voyager in my opinion. - Good Paint application. This guy, aside from the unpainted wheels and autobot hood logo, doesn't really suffer from a lack of paint. -Articulation: He's easy to pose and manuever. -Satisfying transformation: Just the right balance between complex and too easy. -Mech tech ports galore: Strap on every Dark of the Moon weapon you can find onto this guy. Has as least 6 ports in truck mode and at least as many in robot mode. - No robot kibble. There are no robot parts hanging down under the firgure making it look more like an actual truck.
Cons: - Funky forearms. Wheels should have been folded underneath, easily the least movie-like feature of the entire figure. - Unpainted wheels. A minor quip considering how other DotM figures have fared in the paint department. - Ankles. No ankle articulation.
Combined, Weaponized Prime: Pros: - Huge. The combined figure is ginourmous, the box is correct when it say "biggest Optimus Prime". This guy is intimidating. - Lights and sounds. 3 different sound effects triggered by 1 pull tab (extending the gun) and 2 more buttons. - Gun. Again huge. Stores on the trailer, on Prime's back and flips over to have Prime wear a trageting mask and hold the gun with both hands. - Cape/Wings. Those butterfly wings can be positioned in multiple ways, giving it a more cape feel or that crazy x-wing butterfly look. - More Mech Tech ports. The trailer mode is literally covered in spots to attach more weapons. Prime can be a rolling death machine if you so desire. - Articulated arms. Arms movement is actually very good in this mode and how Prime grips the arm controls is remiscent of Sigourney Weaver in Aliens. Very cool.
Cons: - Leg Articulation. The big negative of this mode. Most likely to get the whole thing to work and stand up leg articulation has been sacrificed. Prime just stands there. - Gun placement options. The gun is either in front with Prime hold it with both hands or it is behind him in storage/jet pack mode. This is again probably due to it's sheer size but it would have been nice to have more options in this regard. - Trailer mode doesn't allow you to store stuff in it. No rolling your deluxes out of the back. Understandable since the trailer transforms.
Summary: I view this toy as a very good Voyager-scale Optimus Prime that INCLUDES a trailer. Outside of Masterpiece class or limited edition imports this is basically the only way to get this. The fact that the trailer tranforms to what is essentially a pile of crazy gun emplacement excess is just icing on the cake in my opinion. So if you'd like a solid Optimus Prime figure WITH a trailer, one that can also transform, and are not terribly concerned that the combined figure isn't the pinnacle of poseability then this guy is highly recommended.

A Transformer for the ExpertsSep 22, 2011
By Sara M This transformer looks pretty impressive in it's box (it better, it's flippin' expensive!). I can't imagine a little boy (or man-child) alive who wouldn't be jumping to rip this out of the box and play with it. The weapon it comes with adds some 'WOW' Factor. It lights up and makes a shooting sound. As for the transforming part...VERY DIFFICULT! It comes with "instructions" (I use the term loosely) that show grey and white pictures of Optimus at each stage that you are suppose to follow along. Don't expect any kind of detailed instruction on where exactly to bend the arms or how to get the head to stay pushed down. You're on your own. I'm a transformer novice so it took me about an hour and a half to get this guy changed into a semi-truck. It was worth it though, my boy LOVED it. This is a very cool toy but don't expect to just hand it over to a little guy who's new to the transformer scene. This Opitmus Prime requires a lot of manipulation to transform him back and forth. As for durability, even though this toy looks pretty breakable, it's actually very well put together. I am really surprised at how much abuse it has withstood. Obviously you don't want to give this to a toddler but my 5 year old has played pretty rough with it and it's taken the beating like a pro.

Ultimate Optimus PrimeMar 23, 2012
By HavokH85 To start off I want to say I completely agree with Trans.Collector. ( I highly encourage you the reader to read his review too) You my friend are dead on and couldn't have said it any better. "Pretty good figure but not as ultimate as he could have been" PERFECT! The reason I say that is because I feel that the Revenge of the fallen leader class Optimus With a Bigger Transforming Trailer....That would have been the Ultimate Optimus Prime. But I'm not here to talk about what we dreamed about but what we got.
I'm fairly impressed with this figure. At first I thought his robot mode looked hideous. Big friggin forearms, and over extended torso. I'm sorry but I was spoiled by the ROTF Leader Class Optimus. It was nothing less than Magnificent. But after watching several video reviews I started coming around to the Idea of Ultimate Optimus. So I bought one. And I love it. But it does have a couple/few things that could have been better.
Truck Mode: Good looking truck mode. A little less than the scale of the Trailer. Has six mechtech ports. Size wise. Optimus is Bigger than a Voyager class but Smaller than a Leader Class...an Ultra Class well say.I'm quite happy with the paint app as well. Thank god there is no solar panels (as pictured on the box) and missing flames on the side of the truck. There are some missing flames on the cab roof but...I'm fairly confident a third party producer will help us out with that later. Very sturdy vehicle mode.nothing falls out of place easy. Everything locks in good and tight.
Truck to Robot: This is what really sold me on this figure. It's Transformation is a very unique one. As far as Optimus Primes go. I loved it. Hands on...love it even more. The cons to his transformation is a few parts locks in real tight. I'm nervous as heck they're going to break. So beware of the rear cab sides and the backside cab transformation. One more thing I wanted to add about his transformation. Truck to Robot...Not expert level 3. I would say a solid intermediate 2. It's really just as easy as the deluxe class Bumblebee. Now the Trailer...that is a pain in the you know what.
Trailer: It's a love hate relationship. It's a bit over scaled and could use more paint apps.I'm a little jealous of the Japanese Release but I'm not. On the Japanese release his trailer had the blue stripe on each side. We don't have that on ours. 3rd Party stickers please!!!! Here's the thing about the Japanese Release. Ours is bigger and badder. The Japan release was a repaint of the US Voyager Class with a non transformable trailer. Just a ton of mechtech ports. However...they got a Leader Class DOTM Optimus :( The Trailer itself is quite a heavy chunk of plastic. It looks like it would be unstable and fall apart if touched but looks are very deceiving in this case. Everything locks in securely and tight plus the mechtech weapon adds even more stability.
Trailer Transformation. Its very easy from Trailer to Armor but it is a B&^%$ and a half to get it back to trailer mode. It took me more than a few tries to figure it out but its tricky.
Ultimate Optimus Mode. Absolutely awesome. Easy to connect Optimus to his armor. A few panels open and shut done. Here's where the cons come it. His "wings" snap off way to easy. mainly the top wings but the bottom set will do the same as well. It has a lot more posability than I thought. Arms are decently posable. not just up and down but bends in the middle and has a slight rotation to them. Leg poseability....just a little. up and down and his ankles go side to side...thats about it.
Overall Im really impressed. Again as Trans Collector said Not as Ultimate as he could have been but beggars cant be picky. Definately not a toy for the youngins. I promise if you hand this to a five to 7 year old...broke in less than an hour. It's really an adult per-say (By adult I mean careful and responsible, gentle and patient) toy. If your kid is really gentle, and patient by all means buy it. As for you collectors. Grab one. Great piece to add and well worth 60 bucks
