525 Years of Optimus Prime...Showcased Well...at a Great PriceDec 18, 2008
By N. Palmer "Southern Cross"
Note: I'm a collector who keeps his toys MIB. Keep that in mind reading my review. It may not apply to box destroying kid anxious to get at his/her new toy to jumpit off a ramp into the sandbox with firecrackers and bottlerockets for added effect.

This Christmas marks the 25th year Transformers have been on my Christmas List. No Red Ryders for me...its all about the Cybertron. Fanboys and collectors have had no shortage of commemorative, encore, and reissue editions of Optimus Prime to choose from. This is an excellent combination of goodies to showoff the original version of Optimus Prime. The American market has been lacking severly in the reissue department. Japan seems to get a new slick encore edition of a Transformer everyday. I'm glad to see Hasbro giving fans a nibble of G1 goodness. Sure we had the 2002 TRU commemoratives which were fantastic...but aside from those you need to go to eBay and get some Takara goodies. There's a reason the knock-off market for Transformers is flourishing and booming. Hopefully Hasbro will finally give us the goods if this 25th Anniversary Prime is any indication.

Back to the toy itself. I'll start with the bad. The box is my only problem. I ordered direct from Hasbro and the box was pretty bandged up. It is made of a very thin material. Lots of rips...lots of white peel...lots of dings and dents...not a straight side edge to be found. I'd be surprised to find an AFA 9.0 in the entire production! I searched every store that carried them and could not find one in excellent or mint condition. Sure...not a big to the kiddies...but if you're looking to collect and keep it MIB...you'll have to look hard for one you will eventually settle on. Again...this is a minor issue and only applies to collectors. Given the excellent layout which seems to be geared to those who would display it MIB I thought it was odd. Everything from the flip up comic, the DVD, and Autobot sounds module is very nicely displayed. They even gave Prime a cool, slight tilt in vehicle mode. You can tell attention was paid to the layout.

The contents themselves are a real treat...for your average or the collector. $69.99 retail is a bargain and the $49.99 it is currently going for on Amazon is a steal. Sorry for anyone reading this review a few years later when the retail supply has dried up and just paid $300 on eBay. You get a spot on Hasbro produced reproduction of the G1 Optimus Prime including the battle station trailer and Roller, a DVD containing the first three episodes of the original US cartoon series...three desktop wallpapers for your PC...and some exclusive Optimus Prime and Megatron character art, an electronic sound doo-dad in the shape of the Autobot symbol that has some groovy sound bites, a reproduction of the original Transformers comic book, and to top the package off...the batteries are even included. It is an excellent package of Transformers goodies. Aside from the Masterpiece Editions (Thank you for Starscream and Optimus Hasbro...how bout the rest of them!) I believe this is the coolest G1 product released since the originals hit the shelves.

A no-brainer must-buy for any Transformers fan. Any parent looking to introduce their child to the Transformers they love and remember should definitely give this one a look.

Optimus Prime in the original G1 version is kick-ass!I actually still have my original G1 Optimus and this version is just as good with all the great features you remember from back in the day.Optimus has a more simple look that is still very cool with great realism that is a reminder of why people fell in love with transformers in the first place.Optimus has excellent detail in either mode with a great realistic truck w/trailer mode while having a very classic look in robot mode.Hasbro did an excellent job with the trailer as it is exactly like it was in the G1 days. The trailer converts to a battle station with two firing missiles while having Roller which launches to the aid of Optimus from the trailer. This anniversary pack also comes with an autobot shield that clips to your belt or stands on your desk while also including a reissue of the original Transformer comic book. The autobot shield features speech and conversion sounds as well. The poseability of Optimus is outstanding with great stability for battle scenes or displaying this hero along side the trailer or battle station. The durability is excellent also with Optimus being very solid overall with secure joints so Optimus can handle any decepticon that comes along. You also get a dvd of the groundbreaking tv movie for your viewing pleasure to make things even more awesome. The transformation level is advanced meaning if you have plenty of experience with transformers there is mid-level difficulty. If you are a parent buying for a child of 5-6 or younger you might need to help some in the process.Honestly Optimus is very versatile for all ages with the transformation being very managable for the younger age group. When the transformers originally came out most were made to transform with a simple process. This is a must have for any true, die hard transformer fan around.Bottom line Optimus Prime G1 is a high quality,well-made,10 out of 10 transformer that is still one of the best around.I highly recommend Optimus Prime G1 to all transformer fans and collectors alike.Optimus Prime and Transformers Rule!!!

Bought this toy because it was something that I didn't have when I was a kid and since I was a huge fan I had to buy it. This is an awesome toy!

5Fantastic for nostalgia and new.Jul 12, 2009

I grew up playing with transformers with my brother. For his 34th birthday I decided instead of the usual boring birthday gifts to give him a blast from the past.

He LOVED the Optimus Prime 25 anniversary with the toy, comic and DVD. I think this is the best present I ever gave him. The nostalgia and everlasting feeling transformers gives you are almost priceless.

This product is great. I bought it for collection purposes and don't "play" with it or anything. I never removed it from it's packaging. It's in good condition and was shipped right away.
