2Awesome Looking Gestalt, if only it STAYED TOGETHER.Oct 04, 2010
By Xeokym "xeokym"
Originally, the remake of "Superion" (quite a bit different from its G1 version) came out a few years prior to this boxed set, and was only available in single packages, which came with one plane and one part of the gestalt (a foot, a hand, or with the largest, main jet, the head). They were all either red or blue, and made for a somewhat disjointed-looking Superion when put together due to the mismatching colors. I got the first version by having collected the five separate robots/planes, and I was really disappointed in it because the "hands" hardly look like hands at all, and they are USELESS, they don't hold anything. The "feet" look more like ironing boards. Even though the "arms" and "legs" are interchangeable, no matter how you put it together, the gestalt (the robot all combined) is RICKETY at best, it's top-heavy, and can barely stand on its own. On top of its imbalance, the "legs" barely stay connected, and fall off even with the slightest touch! I got it for my "adult collection," (;0) but how any kid is supposed to PLAY WITH this thing is beyond me! You can't even LOOK at it without it falling apart!

When the box set came out, I was really drawn to the fact that the color scheme is fully-matching, and is less of a hodge-podge looking thing and more of a cohesive, well planned-out gestalt. At the time I bought it, I got it for retail price ($[...]) but now that it's no longer in production I can see the price is going up & up at this point. I'm sorry I bothered spending yet another $[...] on this thing, I don't know what I was thinking. I was fully aware that the first time around the thing fell apart just by thinking about it moving, and yet I somehow was hoping that issue wouldn't be so bad even though this box set is the same exact thing, simply a different color scheme. And yes, it IS the same exact thing: a toppling, top-heavy, disjointed, crumbling, falling-apart "toy" that you cannot play with whatsoever. If you pick it up, both legs tend to fall right out of the slots. If they don't both fall out, at least one will, and the feet may or may not stay on as well. The arms fall off ALMOST as easily, and even if you get them popped in, god forbid you want to pose it. The legs, aside from the fact that they fall off no matter what you do or how you configure it, even when they're staying on by some miracle, they're entirely NOT posable. The only way the gestalt will stand up is if the legs are both perfectly straight and popped out at the hips about 45 degrees, which therefore makes the "feet" not be flat on the ground, and you need to lean it up against something behind it. Forget about bending at the knees or making any kind of "action pose!"

There was a third party, fan-made set of armor for this figure that actually corrects the anatomical "issues" of the gestalt, that ran for around $[...] when it came out (might not even be available now) and made the gestalt appear to look much more like the G1 namesake this Superion is based on. It gave the gestalt solid, normal-looking legs and beefed up the armor and head, making it look more like the robot that appeared in the G1 cartoon. I had always intended on getting the armor for this box set, but I never did, so I'm stuck unfortunately with not one but TWO of these horrible excuses for a combiner robot. Once I get all the arms & legs in place, I have to carefully and slowly move the robot toward a spot to set it down and it almost NEVER gets there in one piece; it's a disaster of design. That's why I gave the "playability" of the toy 1 star, which it does not even deserve...negative five stars would be more accurate. Of course there's nothing educational about Transformers (not that it was ever implied there was) which is why it got 1 star in that category; that doesn't even really apply here. Overall, it's a cool-looking gestalt when fully put together, and the parts that make up the whole are fine. Each plane or jet is based on a real style, and each one transforms into its own robot, except that one arm and one leg are the EXACT SAME OTHER ARM & LEG. In other words, you're getting 5 different toys that combine into 1, except of those 5 toys, you're actually getting 2 each of 2 different figures, not 5 DIFFERENT figures. You can set it up so that both arms are the same and both legs are the same, or that one arm and one leg is the same, and the other arm & leg are the same. That's kind of a cheap shot, a cheap way of getting out of having to design 2 more plane/robots. Lame. And no matter how you snap it together, NOTHING WORKS. The arms & legs all fall out regardless, and even if you DO happen to get it standing up on its own, don't sneeze in the same room or the thing will come falling down & falling apart.

It wasn't worth $[...], and it's certainly not worth paying more than THAT. Unless you get the box set AND plan on also getting ahold of the third party additional armor set, don't waste your time with this thing. Even if you want it just for a collection, and don't plan on playing with it, believe me, you will be pulling out your own hair trying to just get it assembled enough to stand on a shelf. Save your money and put it toward a mint G1 Superion (which, come to think of it, was pretty freakin' wobbly as well...) or better yet, a G1 remake that's WORTH IT, like Predaking or Seaking. If you MUST have this thing for your collection, then try to get a used one, it's barely worth the $[...] retail price when it was new. The only reason I gave it 2 stars overall is because it looks kinda cool, and even so it's hardly worth that extra star; I'm being very generous.
